Modhera Sun Temple is one of the least known temples in India. The Sun Temple, as the name suggests, is a temple of Surya dev (Sun god) & it is approximately 1000 years old! The awe-inspiring architecture of this temple complex is enough to make you curious about the strength & the intelligence of people of that era.
There are many reasons why you should visit Modhera Sun Temple. Before going there, let’s go through some basics.
Modhera Sun Temple
How to reach: Modhera Sun Temple is located in Modhera town of Gujarat, India. The town is approximately 100 km away from Ahmedabad & pretty easy to reach from the megacity. The best option to visit Modhera Sun Temple & Queen’s Stepwell (Rani Ki Vav) is by road. Hire a taxi for a day & visit both places together.
Entry fee: Rs. 15 – Indians | Rs. 200 – Foreigners
What to see: The Sun Temple, Assembly Hall & The Reservoir/Stepwell.
You might ask, “Why should I visit this particular temple considering there are millions of temples in India?” Well, that’s a good question, but I do have few reasons why you must visit Modhera Sun Temple.
1. The Architecture
The architecture of Modhera Sun Temple is very interesting & unique. Considering the structure’s age is over 1,000 years, it is standing like it was built few years ago. The 3 different parts of the complex are unique from each other even though they are designed in a similar fashion.
The most architectural genius is that it is designed in a way that during solar equinox & solstice days, the first rays of the sun directly lights up the image of Sun god! How accurate were the architects of that era!
2. The Serenity
Once you are in the premise of the temple, you will feel the positivity & serenity in the atmosphere. There’s peace all around & you might want to spend more time than you actually thought you would. This brings us to the next point…
3. Lack of People
One thing that annoys many people including me is how crowded every famous monument gets. It is simply annoying to even see the monument in depth because everyone is just running around to capture more & more pictures on their phones and cameras.
Keeping all the awe aspects of this monument in mind, the most striking thing about Modhera Sun Temple is that hardly anyone knows about it or visits it. When I reached here (Around 5:30 PM), there were only 3 people including me. The 2 other people were my friends who came with me. You see? You will feel like this is a private monument which is open only for you to admire. Who doesn’t want that, eh?
4. The Stepwell
I reached Modhera Sun Temple after visiting Rani Ki Vav (Queen’s Stepwell), Patan so I was obviously not expecting anything better than here. Yet, the stepwell here is beautiful. There are small temples everywhere & with the backdrop of Assembly hall, it just looks wonderful.
Also, there are many turtles in the water. Once you are near the water, they will start coming to you one by one (since they, too, hardly ever see humans). Don’t feed them anything because it will make them sick & make water of that stepwell dirty.
Modhera Sun Temple is located just 100 km away from Ahmedabad. Ahmedabad is well-connected with the entire country & even internationally. Once you are in Ahmedabad, keep 1 day just to visit Rani Ki Vav, Patan & Modhera Sun Temple. Trust me, it will be the best part of the journey. (BONUS: You get to see 2 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2 days)
